While in normal times, we would do several gigs per month supporting community, cultural and sport events, we were only left with one option: Video! And not just one, but two (and counting...)!

And I Will Virtually Kiss

Carnival De Lockdown

And I Will Virtually Kiss

Inspired by the unwavering commitment of NHS staff, carers and essential workers, we produced a virtual version of And I Will Kiss, the soundtrack to the Pandemonium segment of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, where our group was born.

This was our way of saying "Thank You", and we are delighted that the video won week 4 of the London New Year's Day Parade Lockdown Competition on Facebook, resulting in a £250 donation to Newham Food Bank, our nominated COVID-19 supporting charity.

LNYDP have donated £250 to local charity @newhamfoodbank1 on behalf of WEEK 4 WINNERS @2012drummers

Newham Food Bank are providing a vital service to those most in need.

FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN ENTER OUR COMPETITION VIA LNYDP FACEBOOK PAGEhttps://t.co/X3ctxIXWUg

#Competition pic.twitter.com/HqbgktN4Xb
— LNYDP (@Lnydp) May 6, 2020

Carnival de Lockdown

Music is important: It keeps your spirits up and provides a welcome light relief to help cope with the anxieties of a stressful situation.

So we created a second video: An uplifting, high-energy version of Dario G's Carnival de Paris, ideal to dance to - get some exercise and rock away!

It even got noticed by Dario G himself:

And the crowd went wild! In absence of the Euros this summer, the new video tech is bringing people together. Music unites us too. Play up!! https://t.co/ZWAiTR4pXY
— Dario G (@dariogofficial) May 25, 2020

The mastermind behind the videos is our own Dan Spence, who developed a bank of rehearsal and filming instructions, a method which will prove useful even after the crisis. Dan invested the equivalent of way more than two full-time working weeks to get the two videos out swiftly.

Support Voluntary Performance Groups

As you can see, we're just a bunch of normal people, trying to make the best out of a difficult situation, as do so many other voluntary performance groups, who suddenly have no audiences and no opportunities to meet up, rehearse and enjoy music making together.

So seek out what groups are doing, watch their videos and let them know if you like it - a good starting point is the Making Music Virtual Concert Series, with new releases every Tuesday 7pm.

Thanks to all contributors, viewers, and supporters!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0London E20 2ST, UK51.5387095 -0.0166037-25.636449860877029 -140.6416037 90 140.6083963tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9103476290788359218.post-86461483846306135992019-07-27T17:52:00.000+01:002019-07-27T17:52:33.520+01:00Seven YearsSeven years ago, on 27th July 2012, the world witnessed a truly spectacular ceremony opening the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Night that Changed our Lives

While the hosting country turned from sarcastic sceptics into proud enthusiasts in a matter of minutes, the world watched in awe, occasionally bewildered, but broadly admiring the shrewd and eccentric creativity on display, with innovative staging tricks never thought possible on this scale.

The night was a triumph, and Danny Boyle, the Oscar-winning director of the Ceremony, consistently emphasised that this was not just to the credit of the immensely skilled and talented professional crews, but largely due to the commitment, willingness and spirit of the 7,500 strong body of volunteer performers, the "most valuable commodity of all", who set the scene and foreshadowed the subsequent positive impact of the 70k Games Makers.

965 of the volunteer performers carried plastic and metal buckets and bins and wore dirty, smelly and oily Industrial Revolution outfits - they marked their presence around ten past nine, with a crescending rumble followed by a resounding bosh that could be heard a mile away from the Olympic stadium, followed by an almighty shout of "Hoy":

The Pandemonium Drummers arrived on the world stage.

And we haven't left since.

Seven Years of Achievements

After seven years, we rocked up to over 250 gigs, including:

Workshops & Wellbeing:
BP, National Trust, UCL, Waitrose

and much, much more...

We also won a Team London Special Achievement Award and a Voluntary Arts Epic Award, and we wrote and produced our own music video Champion, as well as the fun-filled Panda Samba and the evocative Symphony of Waves.

But most important of all, we are carrying forward both the memory and the volunteering spirit of the London 2012 Ceremonies, based on the values of openness, inclusiveness, engagement, enjoyment, improvement, creativity and collaboration.

In the afternoon of the day when beach portraits of individuals from the First World War were painted in the sand before being washed away by the incoming tide, two performances of Symphony of Waves represented our version of a goodbye to those who did not return.

Danny Boyle, director of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony from which the Pandemonium Drummers emerged, described the performance as "very moving", which was reflected by tears in the eyes of a number of spectators.

In six waves of Arrival, Awareness, Anticipation, Concern, Solidarity and Goodbye, over 40 volunteer amateur performers acoustically explored emotional states that people departing for the First World War might have experienced.

The piece responded not just to the occasion, but also to the location, Folkestone Harbour Arm from where 10 million servicepeople departed, with drummers ending the performance with a walk towards the sea, mirroring the soldiers' the final steps on British soil.

The result was a gripping contribution to the commemorative events of the day, and the final part of our performance forms the soundtrack in the official video summary of the day by organisers 14-18 NOW.

Premiere of Symphony of Waves:
Remembrance Sunday, 11th November 2018, at Folkestone Harbour Arm at 1.30pm & 2.30pm.

Presented by over 40 drummers, the semi-improvised piece will explore the concern, anxiety, and commitment of those who left home and started a journey across the sea, from which many did not return.

The 14-minute piece is performed on simple buckets and bins and will evoke memories of a pleasant land left behind and outlooks of an uncertain future.

Symphony of Waves will be released as a community resource in 2019 to invite performances by other groups.
About the Pandemonium Drummers

The Pandemonium Drummers started as a 1,000-strong group of volunteer performers in the Industrial Revolution segment of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony.

They have performed over 250 times since in a wide variety of settings from major stadium sports ceremonies to arts festivals and community events.

With about 100 current members, the Pandemonium Drummers are now a charitable group of voluntary amateur community performers, who uphold the Games volunteering values of Openness, Inclusivity and Engagement and bring enthusiasm, energy and enjoyment to their audiences.

Every other year in March, Sport Relief combines sport and entertainment in a massive fundraiser to help vulnerable people in the UK and across the world.

We supported Sport Relief two years ago in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and this year, we were invited by the BBC to drum at the 5 live-a-side, an endurance challenge for Robbie Savage and his Allstars team of eight celebrities to play 12 straight hours of five-a-side football against participants from this year's FA People's Cup.

So, on the morning of 23rd March 2018, we found ourselves on a coach to MediaCityUK in Salford, where the BBC had turned the Piazza outdoor space into a small 5-a-side stadium.

FC Pandemonium?

Unexpectedly, we could easily have joined the pitch frenzy when we were asked for our team and player names, but with buckets hanging from our necks, the Allstars would have had it too easy, so we passed and instead followed a different prep routine in the shared holding area at the Dock 10 Studios, where the Crawley COGs were very much looking forward to their match.

Following security checks, including a bucket scan and a look under our iconic lightbulb bowler hats, we quickly determined that our presence was vital: the Piazza saw concentrated pitch action with a small crowd in the stands, but a stadium atmosphere it was not - goals were not cheered, no chants, not many supporting rallying cries, and Robbie Savage's team had already seven hours behind them and five more to go!

Adrenaline and motivation boost

The mood changed immediately when we started drumming, and particularly the kids in the audience became animated and cheerful.

We coined the term cheer drumming, and this type of supporting performance with no fixed duration and highly flexible dynamics is ideal for events such as this.

But we also got an opportunity for a showcase performance on the pitch, which was shown live on BBC Red Button!

Until 20th April, you can watch the performance on BBC iPlayer from ca 7hr 50min at:
After about an hour of cheery drumming, the stage manager informed us that we would be going live on BBC One, and asked us to produce some noise in the lead-in to some interviews.

Producing noise is of course something we know how to do, and BBC presenter Ore Oduba gave us a nod with his line "they are still chanting, so this is good".

You can hear, though not see us until 20th April (37m 38s, with VT intro from 36m 11s) at:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b09wyybr/sport-relief-2018-part-1

In case you are wondering, we are stopping rather abruptly as we were apparently too noisy for the interviews, and we had to dash off to catch our coach straight afterwards, with our drummers performing at the London Landmarks Half Marathon for Parkinson UK just 36 hours later.

Meeting the Celebrities

We were particularly chuffed when Harry Judd from McFly, for this day also a member of Robbie Savage's Allstars team, came over to hang out with us a little while.

We stood on the same stage as McFly at the massive Go Local event in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park back in 2013, and we knew the same people such as Mike Dolbear, the drum co-ordinator for the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony.

Harry finally had a go at impersonating a (highly skilled!) Pandemonium Drummer:

The Pandemonium Drummers are looking to recruit new members for a busy 2018 schedule!

We perform at events large and small for numerous good causes.

We are looking for people with energy, a sense of rhythm and movement, the ability to learn new skills and who enjoy performing and entertaining.

You have an opportunity to book one of our introductory workshops on 24 February or 10 March 2018 for a chance to try out bucket drumming and to see whether the Pandemonium Drummers are for you.

Please note, these introductory workshops are the only route to join the Pandemonium Drummers.
Places are limited - first come, first serve!

The workshops will give you an insight into how we started, what we do, how we do it, but more importantly a chance to learn exciting and easy to learn drum routines, movement, warm-up patterns, and some freestyle jamming!

All equipment is provided as well as tea, coffee and biscuits.
All you need to bring is yourself and some lunch.

Come, drum, have some fun, with a little bit of Pandemonium!
Today is our fifth birthday!

It is of course the anniversary of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, for which we were formed.

London 2012 was the incredible starting point that did not just forge the Olympic rings magnificently, but also us as an amateur voluntary drumming group, with professional aspirations.

We would never have imagined, however, that five years on we would still be drumming in Opening Ceremonies, at festivals, in parades, at community events, on TV, in video shoots, for sports events, for cultural events, at weddings, at funerals, at corporate events, for volunteers, and at a variety of other events.

But here we are in 2017, the year we returned to London's iconic Olympic Stadium (for the World Para Athletics Championships), and we are going strong - we even made our own song and music video last year: Champion!

Introducing: The PD Timeline

This is an excellent time to take stock, so we started a multimedia timeline.
It is still needs to be populated with all details, but you can already browse the first year of our existence in all its glory.
Here's to the next 5 years - best wishes to all fellow London 2012 Ceremonies Volunteer Performers, to the London 2012 Ceremonies creatives and operatives, to the London 2012 Games Makers & London Ambassadors, to all organisations and individuals who supported us, and to all who enjoyed the ceremonies, particularly the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony - watch it again here!
It's like London buses: None for a long time, and suddenly three turn up at once. In our case, it was three Opening Ceremonies in the space of just eight days.

Add to that one parade and a workshop, and we had our own take on the popular movie Four Weddings and a Funeral:
Four Gigs and a Workshop!

Our joyful July week kicked off with an early morning performance at the Opening Ceremony of the 40th London Youth Games Summer Finals at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on 6th July 2017.

This was our fourth time at the London Youth Games, and this year we performed our single Champion to motivate the school children for their competitions.

At the biggest ever Pride in London Parade on 8th July 2017, we were invited to march with LGBT rights charity Stonewall, the largest group of the parade.

Equipped with Stonewall's signature red "get over it" shirts, we samba-ed through London to bang our drums for equality and acceptance, and to celebrate diversity.

The parade generated huge traffic on social media.

Gig 3: Rathbones Women's Lacrosse World Cup

Apparently, Rathbones Women's Lacrosse World Cup never had a spectacular Opening Ceremony, so we travelled to Surrey Sports Park in Guildford to join forces with Rock Choir and showcase that the UK does sports presentations properly at all levels!

We were on the field of play throughout the ceremony on 12th July 2017, starting with an energetic backdrop soundtrack for the athletes' parade, and ending with a joint performance of All Over The World together with the Rock Choir and groups of local school children.

In between, we performed our single Champion - for the first time with a live singer! Fellow drummer and Champion composer Denis Fernando took to the microphone and boosted athletes' morale with an affirmative performance of our charity single.

Under the watchful eye of HRH Princess Anne, the ceremony was streamed live on YouTube by Lacrosse TV. Watch the performance of Champion below, or the full ceremony on Lacrosse TV.
The final of this one-week series of gigs could not have been selected any better:

We returned to the location of our very first gig (which was the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony for those not familiar with our history): A welcome return back home to the London Stadium, as it is now known, to open another world sporting event: London 2017.

The Opening Ceremony of the World Para Athletics Championships on 14th July 2017 focused on the protocol items: Speeches, oaths and raising of the British and Paralympic flags. Our 30 drummers were effectively the only show element besides fireworks, and we drummed functionaries and athletes onto and off the stage, and provided an attractive visual backdrop.

More importantly, we created a symbolic narrative linking London 2012 with London 2017 thanks to our original bucket drums from the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, as well as our original lightbulb bowler hats from the London 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony, and in some cases even the original trousers and shoes from the London 2012 ceremonies!

Watch the full World Para Athletics Championships Opening Ceremony below.
It was fantastic to fill the stadium again with the sound of our bucket drums!

And the workshop?

In between the flurry of gigs, we delivered a health and wellbeing workshop on 11th July 2017, this time for the UCL Institute of Education.

We have previously delivered drumming workshops for organisations such as Waitrose, the National Trust and the East London NHS Foundation Trust.
If you are in London on New Year's Day, join the crowd for the London New Year's Day Parade! This time, the motto is Lights, Camera, Action - find out what we've prepared in response!
September in London means Totally Thames, and 2016 saw the 8th Classic Boat Festival at the wonderful St Katharine Docks - wonderfully beautiful even in warm September rain.

But the weather did not stop the public to enjoy a 45 minute Pandemonium Drummers performance, getting a taste of what it feels like to be motivated with a selection of cheer drumming songs that we normally use to support runners at marathons or local runs.

Unexpectedly, festival visitors were also treated to a proper premiere:
The first ever drumming performance of our charity single Champion, written by fellow drummer Denis Fernando and produced by Felix Buxton from Basement Jaxx.

Champion was a most appropriate backdrop to one of the yachts coincidentally bearing a Champion flag!

Of course we couldn't leave the stage without a rendition of And I Will Kiss, the song that underlined our performance at the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony.

The Pandemonium Drummers' Fourth Year

Like the Government and the Mayor of London, the Pandemonium Drummers have been and continue to be very busy building a legacy of the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

For our fourth anniversary, we created a veritable milestone: our first new single, Champion, in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust and produced by Felix Buxton of Basement Jaxx!

Exactly four years ago, the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony wowed the world, in particular the Pandemonium segment with the unforgettable soundtrack by Underworld and supplemented by 1,000 drummers - the birth of the Pandemonium Drummers!

If you weren't in the Olympic Stadium on that night, or in one of the dress rehearsals, you can only imagine how the sound of 1,000 drums must have felt - over 200,000 people can attest: It was earth-shaking and spine-tingling.

None of us could have expected that on that day, a group was formed that would continue to play: Strangers became friends, people who never drummed before became proficient performers, and the whole nation was presented with a reinvigorating idea to believe in.

Now, four years later, we are not just proud that we are still performing and volunteering, heading from stadium to festival to community celebration to sports event, we are now extremely excited to release our very first single:

Written by Pandemonium Drummer Denis Fernando, produced by Felix Buxton of Basement Jaxx, and supported by a wide variety of artists, volunteers and production creatives, this is a celebration of the London 2012 Games and their volunteers, as well as an anthem of unity, hope and positivity.

That's why we teamed up with the Teenage Cancer Trust as beneficiaries. We became aware of their incredibly life-affirming work when one of their service users, Stephen Sutton MBE, fulfilled a bucket list item by drumming with us in front of a large crowd at the UEFA Champions League Final 2013 at Wembley Stadium.

We made Stephen our only Honorary Pandemonium Drummer to date, and remained in contact. Stephen's Story touched the world, and we were honoured to lead the cortege at his funeral in Lichfield, celebrating a most inspirational young man who spread hope and positivity in bucketloads.

Champion is dedicated to Stephen.

The Teenage Cancer Trust played an active role in the recording of the single through Melissa Cavanagh (BBC The Voice - Team George), Gina Maloney, and Lauren Ilsley.

Spectators were treated to short previews of the track; its anthemic nature fitted the context perfectly to celebrate athletes winning their competitions.

Champion therefore found its natural habitat, and we trust our song can be used for future celebrations of Champions at a wide range of events.

A delegation of drummers joined spectators and provided photo opportunities with the catchwords of Champion: Bigger, Better, Brighter - Harder, Tougher, Stronger.

Just a few days before the fourth anniversary of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, where the Pandemonium Drummers were formed, having our new track played in the same stadium completed a full circle for us.
Champion is a charity single in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust, released on 27 July 2016 on Atlantic Jaxx Recordings.
Visiting the Müller Anniversary Games Athletics Diamond League competitions, several Pandemonium Drummers returned to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, where we burst onto the scene with mighty rhythms and shouts during the Industrial Revolution scene of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony.

None of us would have thought that four years later we would be releasing new music in collaboration with members of the Basement Jaxx family and with the support of Jane Sutton, mother of our only honorary drummer, the late Stephen Sutton MBE, who drummed with us at the UEFA Champions League Final 2013 at Wembley Stadium.

BBC Radio 5 live caught up with our drummers Jan Pearson, Helen Isaacs and Vera Yu and other Games Makers at the Stadium, running an interview about what it was like to be part of the London 2012 Olympics - our new single and video Champion caught particular interest with BBC's Jonathan Overend.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Pandemonium Drummers will be returning once again to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Sunday 20th March to entertain the crowds and cheer on competitors during the Sport Relief Games 2016.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">With our bucket drums, signature blue bowler hats and some energising beats, our task will be to spur on the participants as they make their way round the course raising money for a worthy cause.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We will be doing what we call "Cheer-Drumming" - which is along the lines of cheer-leading except we have drums instead of pom-poms, beats instead of chants and some limited choreography - high kicks are impractical whilst having percussion strapped on!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This will be our second appearance at the Sport Relief Games as we also drummed at the previous time it was held in 2014. They asked us back so we must be doing something right!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

More about Sport Relief

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sport Relief is back from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th March and there are more ways than ever for you to take part, change lives and feel proud. Whether you get sponsored to enter an event at the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games or fundraise with friends and family at home, work or school you’ll help people living incredibly tough lives. In fact, half of all the money raised by the public is spent right here at home in the UK, with the other half used to make a difference in the world’s poorest communities.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There’ll also be tons of top telly for you to look out for, across the BBC, in the run-up to the Sport Relief Weekend. It all culminates in an unmissable Night of Sport Relief TV, live from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Find out more at sportrelief.com.
Here is the response from our drummer Vicki:

Kodo One Earth Tour 2016: Mystery

Rumble, building up, then dying away. People with lights over their heads that they switch
on and off. So far, so Pandemonium. But then there are dragons, and a synchronised,
polished performance that doesn’t come from sporadic rehearsals at “Fire” and the occasional
workshop at Harrow, which is how the Pandemonium Drummers train.

This is KODO – heartbeat, children of the drum, way of the drum, and there is nothing else
like it on earth.

Based on the island of Sade, the troupe was founded 35 years ago to continue the study and
practice of the O-daiko, Chu-daiko (drums), chappa (hand cymbal) and fue (flute).
Preparation was, and continues to be, rigorous with one third of the year devoted to intensive
training to develop technique and physical stamina. When I saw them in 1996, I am sure it
was an all male ensemble. Now female students are admitted to, and pass, the tough two year
apprenticeship. Only the very best are considered for further training.

The inclusion of female performers is due no doubt to their current artistic director
Tamasaburo Bando, a noted onnagata (Kabuki actor of female roles). This is 21st Century
Kodo, a theatrical show that draws on the rich and varied folk traditions of Japan.

15
drummers, 36 drums, 4 dragons and 1 lion present a spectacle that is comic and thrilling by
turns: three demons annoy some villagers and are subdued by food and copious amounts of
sake; four girls conduct a conversation with wooden percussion, gradually changing mood
until their squabbling is interrupted by a lion which they chase away with the help of other
performers; three drummers with four drums perform an intricate routine, lit in such a way
that the shadows they cast bring to mind the Shamanic rituals that are at the heart of the
drumming; two drummers perform either side of a single drum, their wide-legged stance
serving to enhance their power and attack.

These are performances of technical virtuosity that few can match. The whole performance
culminated in a splendid ensemble piece blending skill and humour, with the drummers so
obviously enjoying themselves it was infectious.

Personally, I did miss the feeling of ritual that I sensed 20 years ago, and comments I
overheard on my way to the station indicated that others were missing the more serious side
evident in earlier shows. However, it was an enjoyable spectacle and I hope that Kodo return
to London soon.
On Valentine's Day, 14 Feb 2016 at 1pm, we will fill the Grand Entrance Hall of the Brunel Tunnel with the sound of our buckets and bins to create an unforgettable experience as part of the SEE16 Arts Festival.

We will play a full set, of course including a re-enactment of our part of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, but also other pieces that we performed at events such as the London Youth Games or the London New Years Day Parade.

Specially for the SEE16 Festival, we have prepared something we have never done before - a premiere!

At this historic venue, we will of course also enlist the help of our Ceremony Performer friends the Working Men and Women, and you will get to meet Mr Brunel himself.

Entrance is free, but pre-booking is advised to guarantee entry.
Sunday 14th February 2016, 1-2pm at the Brunel Museum

Please note, the first 10 minutes and the finale will be loud (within health and safety limits), and the venue has access restrictions, involving a small climb, a half height doorway and a temporary staircase (no high heels please).

The world's first successful underwater tunnel was constructed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and is today used for the East London Line of the London Overground between Rotherhithe and Wapping.

Originally used as a foot tunnel, grand entrance halls were located at either end, and these were built with new construction methods.

The Grand Entrance Hall at the Rotherhithe end forms part of the Brunel Museum, which does regular tours of the hall and is well worth a visit.

While a new entrance to the hall is currently under construction, visitors will still have to use the current Hobbit Hole entrance, which is only 90cm high and involves climbing over a wall - our concert will be one of the last opportunities to use the Hobbit Hole before the new entrance opens in March.
